Bilstein vs. FOX Truck Shocks: Choose by Use Case
Choose between Bilstein and FOX by exact fitment and use, not by a blanket brand ranking. Bilstein’s 5100, 5160 and 6112 families and FOX’s 2.0/2.5 Performance and Factory lines contain different designs. Reservoirs, adjusters, serviceability and warranties apply only where the manufacturer lists them for that product.

Bilstein: strengths and boundaries
The B8 5100 is a 46 mm monotube, application-specific shock for lifted trucks and SUVs; selected front applications add spring-seat ride-height adjustment. The B8 5160 adds a remote reservoir for greater oil capacity and heat dissipation. The B8 6112 is a front 60 mm coilover package that includes springs and spring seats. These examples do not make every Bilstein product adjustable, reservoir-equipped or field-serviceable.
FOX: strengths and boundaries
FOX states that its current 2.0 and 2.5 Performance Series uses an internal floating piston to separate oil from nitrogen. The range includes IFP and remote-reservoir configurations. Some exact products add external compression adjustment, but not every FOX shock does. A 2.5-inch body or Factory Series name also does not prove that an application has internal bypass; rely on the exact product description.
Warranty and service
Bilstein currently lists limited lifetime coverage for B8 5100 and B8 6112 products and two-year coverage for B8 5160, subject to its North American terms. FOX’s limited-lifetime policy covers eligible 2.0 and 2.5 Performance Series products purchased after March 30, 2025, but it explicitly excludes 2.0 Performance Series remote-reservoir shocks; those remain in the one-year category, subject to the policy terms. Purchase date, original-owner status and use matter. Serviceability is likewise product-specific; confirm parts and service support before making it a buying criterion.
Five checks that decide the purchase
- Exact year, make, model, drivetrain and factory suspension.
- Current lift method and measured hub-to-fender height.
- Permanent front/rear accessory weight and typical cargo.
- Required travel and clearance at compression, droop and full steering lock.
- Desired adjustability, local service access and current warranty terms.
